When Silence Nurses |  2026

Handbuilt earthen clay sculpture, sound

Sculpture fabricated by Al Fakher Pottery, Sharjah
Sound mix by João Menezes

Excerpts from H. R. P. Dickson’s The Arab of the Desert, 1949.

When Silence Nurses begins with the Dickson archive and the unequal conditions through which Bedouin women’s knowledge entered the colonial record. I approach the archive as material that can be reopened through clay, sound, and bodily encounter.

The installation consists of two large earthen-clay breasts, each holding a speaker. One carries a non-linguistic voice from the past, attempting to transmit knowledge that can no longer be fully understood. The other emits a robotic sound from the future. With the present absent, the two remain caught in a loop of failed communication. The work asks what happens to inherited knowledge when a rupture occurs in society. To listen, the viewer must bend toward the sculpture and bring their ear close to the nipple. This posture turns listening into an embodied act of transmission.
